What is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Specialist?

A MFM physician, also referred to as a Perinatologist, is a board certified obstetrician who has completed 3 years of additional training in caring for High Risk obstetrical patients and are boarded in their sub-specialty. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist works in consultation with the obstetrician to obtain the best outcome for both mother and baby. Perinatal consultation is helpful whenever a pregnancy is complicated by a medical, obstetrical, or genetic condition, or when there is a suspected fetal abnormality.
